Twitter has suspended the Russian Embassy in Germany’s account for one week, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday.
The U.S. social media platform took action over the account for “violating Twitter’s policies regarding the dissemination of false or misleading information” after it tweeted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s claim that Russian forces discovered chemical weapons laboratories in eastern Ukraine. Twitter believes that the claim is “unproven”.
“It seems the lights have gone out at the Statue of ‘Liberty’ in New York,” Zakharova wrote in a Telegram post.
Twitter earlier took action against official Russian accounts after they tweeted about the bombing of a Mariupol maternity hospital by Ukrainian forces in March.
