On Friday, in the program of the University of Chicago, Indian National Congress (INC) leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein also won the elections.
Gandhi made this claim in order to discredit the election victories of their biggest opposition Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) against INC, mainly in general elections of 2014 and 2019.
But the claim that Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader and colonel who was ousted in 2011 Libyan Civil war, ‘won the election’ is completely false.
Gaddafi came into prominence in 1969 after he led a bloodless coup against the King of Libya Idris I.
Idris I was unpopular among the masses of Libya and Gaddafi was celebrated as a revolutionary for overthrowing the monarchy, thus starting a new chapter in the history of Libya.
The first prime minister of Libya was Mahmud Suleiman Maghribi, who reigned as PM from 8 September 1969 – 16 January 1970. After Maghribi, Muammar Gaddafi reigned in as PM from 16 January 1970 – 16 July 1972, after which he became a chairman of governing body Libyan Revolutionary Command Council, which ruled Libya until 1977 when the country supposedly adopted ‘direct democracy’ without any political parties and renamed itself as Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and remained as such until 2011.
But there was never a circumstance when Gaddafi had to fight elections or they ever occurred in Libya before his death in October 2011.
Saddam Hussein never fought any elections either.
We can conclude at this stage that Rahul Gandhi with his claim that Saddam and Gaddafi won elections is yet another senseless comment by Rahul.
