Latvia’s parliament has urgently voted for a bill that aimed at declaring May 9 as a day of remembrance for those killed in Ukraine.
As follows from the amendments to the legislation, this day will be a mourning day and because of that, all entertainment and festive events will be banned.
Firework displays will be also banned on May 8 and 9.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has referred to the decision as disgraceful. He expressed the hope that Latvians will remember history and keep it in their hearts.
“It is to be hoped that the Latvians, who remember history, appreciate it, and are proud of it, will keep it in their hearts in defiance of this absolutely disgraceful decision by their authorities,” Peskov said.
The declaration by Latvia reeks of rampant Russophobia prevalent in the country.
Earlier, the Latvian parliament prohibited mass V-Day events in front of the monuments to the Red Army. Public display of the letter Z, which has become a symbol of support for the Russian army, but has been outlawed too in the country.
